What is a Yankee bet?
A Yankee bet is a multiple bet that consists of 11 bets on four different selections. The 11 bets are made up of 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 four-fold accumulator. To place a Yankee bet, the bettor must choose four different selections in different events.
The exact origin of the term “Yankee bet” is not entirely clear, but it is believed to have originated in the United States.
One theory is that the term “Yankee” refers to a person from the northern United States, particularly New England. This theory suggests that the bet was popularized by horse racing enthusiasts in the northern states.
Another theory is that the term “Yankee” was used to describe a type of bet that was popular among American soldiers stationed in Britain during World War II. The bet was said to have been introduced to British bookmakers by American servicemen, who referred to it as a “Yankee” bet.
Regardless of its exact origin, the term “Yankee bet” has now become a commonly used term in the world of sports betting.
To place a Yankee bet, the bettor would place 11 bets, covering all possible combinations of doubles, trebles, and a four-fold accumulator
Each of the 11 bets has to have the same unit stake. This makes a Yankee bet more costly than just an accumulator on the 4 selections.
What is an example of a Yankee bet?
Let’s say a bettor wants to place a Yankee bet on four horse races:
- Horse A to win the 2:00 race
- Horse B to win the 3:30 race
- Horse C to win the 4:15 race
- Horse D to win the 5:00 race
The bettor would place 11 bets, covering all possible combinations of doubles, trebles, and a four-fold accumulator:
- 6 doubles: AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD
- 4 trebles: ABC, ABD, ACD, BCD
- 1 four-fold accumulator: ABCD
If all four selections were correct, the bettor would win all 11 bets. The minimum requirement for a payout in a Yankee bet is two correct selections. In this scenario, the bettor would win one double. If three selections are correct, the bettor would win one treble and three doubles. If all four selections are correct, the bettor would win one four-fold accumulator, four trebles, and six doubles.
