What is a Heinz bet?
A Heinz bet is a type of multiple bet that involves making six selections on different events. It consists of 57 separate bets on those selections – 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds, and 1 six-fold accumulator.
The bet is named after the Heinz brand of food products, which has 57 varieties.
To place a Heinz bet, the bettor selects six different outcomes, such as the winners of six different horse races or the outcomes of six different football matches. These six selections are then combined to create the 57 separate bets that make up the Heinz.
Each of the 57 bets has to have the same unit stake. This makes a Heinz bet more costly than just an accumulator on the six selections.
What is an example of a Heinz bet?
Let’s say a bettor wants to place a Heinz bet on six horse races at a track. The bettor selects the following six horses:
- Horse A to win the first race
- Horse B to place (finish in first or second) in the second race
- Horse C to win the third race
- Horse D to place in the fourth race
- Horse E to win the fifth race
- Horse F to win the sixth race
To create the 57 separate bets that make up the Heinz, these six selections are combined in the following way:
- 15 doubles: A-B, A-C, A-D, A-E, A-F, B-C, B-D, B-E, B-F, C-D, C-E, C-F, D-E, D-F, E-F
- 20 trebles: A-B-C, A-B-D, A-B-E, A-B-F, A-C-D, A-C-E, A-C-F, A-D-E, A-D-F, A-E-F, B-C-D, B-C-E, B-C-F, B-D-E, B-D-F, B-E-F, C-D-E, C-D-F, C-E-F, D-E-F
- 15 four-folds: A-B-C-D, A-B-C-E, A-B-C-F, A-B-D-E, A-B-D-F, A-B-E-F, A-C-D-E, A-C-D-F, A-C-E-F, A-D-E-F, B-C-D-E, B-C-D-F, B-C-E-F, B-D-E-F, C-D-E-F
- 6 five-folds: A-B-C-D-E, A-B-C-D-F, A-B-C-E-F, A-B-D-E-F, A-C-D-E-F, B-C-D-E-F
- 1 six-fold accumulator: A-B-C-D-E-F
Assuming the bettor’s wager is successful and all six selections win or place as predicted, the payout would depend on the odds for each of the 57 separate bets. The payout would be higher if more of the selections win or place, as the bets with more correct selections would have higher odds.
Only two of the seven selections needs to win to get some payout (one of the double bets would payout). However it would need more than two selections to be correct to make a profit due to the high stakes required for a Super Heinz bet.
As an example, if only four out of the six selections win, the bettor would still receive payouts on the following bets:
