What is an Alphabet bet?
An Alphabet bet is a type of combination bet that involves 6 selections and a total of 26 different bets.
The term “alphabet” in an Alphabet bet comes from the number of bets that are combined. This type of bet is also known as a “Alphabetical” or “Alphabetized” bet because it consists of 26 different bets, one for each letter of the alphabet. The bet is similar to a Lucky 31, but instead of five selections, it includes six. The extra selection is combined in every possible way with the other five to make 26 separate bets.
An Alphabet bet is actually made up from four other types of complex bets
- 2 Patent bets. One from the first 3 selections (7 bets) and a patent bet from the last 3 selections (7 bets)
- 1 Yankee bet from selections two to five (11 bets)
- A Six-fold Accumulator with all six selections
The 26 winning combinations are:
6 Singles: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
12 Doubles: 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 4-5, 4-6, 5-6, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 3-4, 3-5, 4-5
6 Trebles: 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 2-3-4, 2-3-5, 2-4-5, 3-4-5
1 Four-fold: 2-3-4-5
1 Six-fold: 1-2-3-4-5-6
What is an example of an Alphabet bet?
Let’s say a bettor wants to place an Alphabet bet on six different horse races. The bettor would list them from 1 to 6 with the two least favourable selections placed in positions 1 and 6. The six horses are:
- Horse A
- Horse B
- Horse C
- Horse D
- Horse E
- Horse F
- Patent bet 1 would include the selections ABC
- Patent bet 2 would include the selections DEF
- The Yankee bet would include BCDE – selections 1 and 6 are not included and that is why these postions are where the bettor should put the least favourable selections
- The six-fold Accumulator is on all six selections ABCDEF
In an Alphabet bet, the potential return can vary depending on which individual bet or bets win. For instance, if the patent bet among the 26 bets makes a return, the payout would be smaller than if the six-fold accumulator bet were to win. The payout depends on the number of successful bets made and the odds of each individual selection. Therefore, the potential return can be different for each bettor and will depend on the outcomes of the selections chosen.
