What is an accumulator bet?

Also known as an “Acca” (slang) or a “Parlay bet” (more commonly used in the US).

An accumulator bet is a type of wager that combines multiple individual bets into one single bet.

In an accumulator bet, all the selections must be correct in order for the bettor to win. Each selection is referred to as a “leg” of the bet and the more legs added to the bet, the higher the potential payout.

However, the risk also increases with each leg added, as it becomes more difficult to predict the outcome of all the selections. The potential payout is calculated by multiplying the odds of each leg together. For example, if you placed an accumulator bet with four legs at odds of 2.00, 3.00, 4.00, and 5.00, the potential payout would be 2 x 3 x 4 x 5 = 120.

A double and treble (not to be confused with a Trixie bet) are actually accumulator bets but are more commonly known as doubles and trebles. The term accumulator or parlay is normally used for bets consisting of four or more legs.

What is an example of an accumulator bet?

A bettor wants to place an accumulator bet on the following four matches:

  • Team A to win against Team B
  • Team C to win against Team D
  • Team E to win against Team F
  • Team G to draw against Team H

The odds for each match are as follows:

  • Team A to win against Team B: 2.00
  • Team C to win against Team D: 3.00
  • Team E to win against Team F: 4.00
  • Team G to draw against Team H: 5.00

If the bettor places £10 on this accumulator bet and all four matches go as predicted, the potential payout would be £10 x (2 x 3 x 4 x 5) = £1,200.

So in this example, the bettor would have to select four different outcomes and all of them have to be correct in order to win the bet, if any of them is not correct the bettor would lose the entire bet.
